Edward J. Steel was born August 24, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York to Joseph, a line foreman for AT&T and Dorothy, a devoted housewife and mother.
He attended Indiana University on an athletic scholarship and became captain for the Judo Team. His collegiate athletic career was highlighted by being a competitor at the 1976 Olympic Trials. He graduated in 1978.
While attending Logan College of Chiropractics in St. Louis, Missouri, his interest shifted from martial arts to body building. He won the collegiate Mr. Region 8 title and qualified to compete in the Collegiate Mr. America contest. All the while, maintaining academic excellence. He obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Logan College in 1982.
Dr. Steel’s love of sports continued in both his private and professional life. In 1987, he completed a one year post graduate degree in sports medicine and received a degree as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP). During this period, in a little known sport of Hoover Ball, Dr. Steel led his team to four consecutive national championships.
This game was invented by President Herbert Hoover’s physician. It is played on an outdoor Volley Ball Court with a four pound medicine ball. The ball is heaved over the net and scored like tennis. A National Championship is played every year at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa.
During the late 1990’s, in his never ending pursuit of developing his mind and body, Dr. Steel once again became involved with Martial Arts, this time in the form of Tae Kwon Do. He is a third degree Black Belt and a nationally certified Tae Kwon Do Instructor. He has won several national championships in both sparring and forms.
In 2006, Dr. Steel completed a three year Post Graduate Degree in Sports Medicine. He is currently the only Chiropractic Physician in the state of North Carolina to be a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP).
Dr. Steel now devotes much of his time to his wife, Tiffany, their son Highlind and their three miniature long-haired dachshunds, Issy,Ellee and Emma (the apple of their daddy’s eye).
